PhD thesis position on Metrology applications of a 3 photon resonance, Lab. PIIM, Aix-Marseille University, France

Our group is partner of the French National project REFIMEVE which proposes the distribution of a frequency reference signal of metrological quality on the French Higher
Education Fiber Network (see online REFIMEVE). We will make use of this ultra-stable frequency signal to develop high-precision measurements in trapped ions.
The ultimate objective of this project is to observe a THz-referenced dark resonance, induced by three-photon population trapping in a laser-cooled ion cloud as for example outlined in [1]. This achievement will be an important step forward for multi-photon coherent processes and we want to illustrate its usefulness by measuring transition dipoles in calcium ions with an unreached precision so far, necessary to discriminate among several theoretical results.

- Aim:
The thesis is mainly experimental, requiring competences in atomic physics, optics and lasers. In a team of several permanent researchers and a postdoc, the PhD student will concentrate on the spectroscopy of the trapped ions in a large ion trap. The interrogation of the confined sample is at the heart of the project and the interrogation protocol has to be prepared carefully in order to take into account experimental constraints and projected performances. We are looking for a candidate with a high motivation for an ambitious project.

- Context:
The project will be carried out in an international research team (http://piim.univ-amu.fr/Presentation).
Working language will be French and/or English. For details, please contact the head of the group Martina Knoop - email as soon as possible with a full cv, academic records, and a motivation letter.
