- Scope of the school

Mesoscopic physicists now create artificial quantum systems whose internal degrees of freedom are collective variables like voltages and currents, and whose energy levels and transitions are externally controlled by electromagnetic signals. The coherence time of these artificial atoms has been improved during the last decade to a point where they are now closely approaching the purity and effectiveness of natural atoms and ions in quantum optics. In parallel, error correction methods have been developed to extend to infinity the coherence time of imperfect systems. The goal of the school is to equip students with the basic knowledge about controllable artificial quantum systems for which the measurement of a single dynamical variable is only limited in precision by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle.
